Meredith Hink works with the Children’s Garden at Kane Street Community Garden. While driving to the garden one morning, Meredith Hink notices a red-tail fox walking down the sidewalk. She describes the importance of nature in the garden and why the garden is important to her.

Meredith Hink: When you’re in the main parking lot at the Kane Street Community Gardens, at one point in time, we had a fox family that lived in the garden. And of course, it’s very rare to see a fox, usually during the day because when the people are in the garden, they’re gonna stay away, stay in their dens. But I had to go very early one morning to do some watering. And as I was driving up, this beautiful red-tail fox comes out, bold as brass, just starts walking on down the sidewalk like it owns the place. It was magical. I just-you-you can’t predict those things, and I get a lot of those experiences too, where we have animals that will show up in the garden, and that’s been an opportunity, too, about making sure that we leave nature as it is, not trying to interact, because it’s important for nature to take its course. My name is Meredith Hink. Working with Kane Street really has helped to fulfill a lot of different aspects in my life. We’re not just growing produce there; we’re growing a community. And that’s really what Kane Street’s about, that’s why community is part of the name of the actual garden.
