Dan Marcou: We got a call one night. They were looking for a woman who had been kidnapped in Kokomo, Indiana. We get a description of his car. They have no idea where he is. Investigator Joe Holesky and I, I might have been in his unmarked, but he had me along ’cause I knew the northside. And we finally come across the car parked against a house that is no longer there. But it’s over on, um, Clinton Street, near Clinton and Avon, and it’s parked at the back. And we get the heck out of there.

So, I was on the SWAT team then, and we made a plan to make an entry into the place quick, silent until we had to make some noise. Boom, the warrant comes in for searching the house. As this is what being a Northsider and a La Crosse officer is all about. We could have said, “Stand back, Kokomo officer this is ours to do,” right? But he was the dog with a bone. There’s nobody in that house except either the body or the women. Would you like to be the person that goes in and searches it? He says, “yes, please.”

Open a cabinet, and as soon as it opens, a woman pops out like a jack in the box and, with so much energy and so much excitement, threw her arms around the detective that was there. That’s a thank you that if you’re given a million dollars or the thank you, you would have taken that thank you.
